The source of the scriptural basis for baby dedication background to a child can be discovered in 1 Samuel 1:27-28 (NASB) in which a holy woman called Hannah was a prayerful woman who prayed year after year for God to bless her with an infant. She was blessed by God and she gave the birth of a son who she called Samuel. Samuel was born. Samuel arrived, Hannah prayed these words:
“For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.”
The story is found in Luke chapter 2, from Luke chapter 2, in the New Testament, following the birth of Jesus, Mary and Joseph brought the baby dedication Jesus in the holy temple to dedicate Him.
For both Scripture passages, parents gave their child totally to God.
Moses’ writings Moses that are contained in Deuteronomy 6:5-9 outline God’s plans for how parents should guide their child’s development:
“Love God Your God and with your whole heart, with all your heart as well as with your full might. The commandments I offer you today should be in your heart. Remind your children. Discuss them with them.
while sitting at home, or while walking through the city while lying down, and after getting up. Make them symbols in your hands and tie them to your foreheads. Put them on the door frames of your houses.
and at and on.”
One of the ways to show your determination to raise your child according to the teachings to follow the way of God can be to dedicate them to God publicly, by way of an event of dedication for your child.
Suggestions: I’m making a vow before God to commit my child. How do I keep it?
Let’s revisit Deuteronomy 6:5-9, which outlines God’s plans for how parents should guide their child’s development and then draw some practical tips from it
1. Be a living example of your faith.
The first thing that this passage states is: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.” If you’re committed to your child’s relationship with God (i.e. desire to see them be devoted to God and follow God) Then your life should serve as an example for them. They will emulate the faith they see in your actions.
2. Be Intentional
The other point this passage outlines is: “Impress them on your children” . Training in the Scriptures. Training in Prayer. Training in Service. Training in Giving. Etc. This doesn’t occur on their own. It’s a process that requires work and the development of a plan. Spiritually educating your child will be (a) not something that is passive as well (b) it is your duty and not the responsibility of the church (see the previous passage).
3. Create a Rhythm
The second aspect this passage mentions is: “Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
It’s as practical.
- When you are at home, around your table for dinner.
- as you walk on the street – or in the car.
- as you lay down the bedtime conversation
- When you wake up, the morning chats.
Deuteronomy lays out that the responsibility of teaching children is the responsibility of parents. Sunday schools may provide regular instruction, but parents should take advantage of the teaching occasions that occur throughout the day. Spend time praying daily together with children. You can read Bible stories aloud in the morning before going to bed. Help them in the church or outside of it. Establish a routine that they can rely on and are committed to.
Logistical Questions: What can I expect at the ceremony of a baby dedication background?
During the dedication ceremony parents make vows to God as well as their family and their church, expressing their intention to nurture their children in a godly manner. Since parents are the primary role model for their kids, they have an important part in the dedication ceremony.
The Ceremony
Parents must take their child to the stage following the opening worship set during the intro video.
- Parents will be on the stage along with an elder along with their child.
- The pastor or elder will then make a few brief remarks about the dedication of a baby dedication and what we’re doing during this ceremony (see the previous paragraph).
- Following their brief introductions Following their brief introductions, you will be asked the following questions:
“Parents,
Parents, take note the importance of making commitments to God and keeping them is a serious matter before God. Ecclesiastes 5:4 states: “When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.” When make promises to God and keep them, make sure you follow through with these promises.
- Do you commit today that you will follow your Lord you God with all your heart, body, mind and strength to serve to set an example for your child? Do you recognize that your children’s likelihood to follow God’s way because of the example they first see in your life? – We’ll
- Do you pledge to be conscious of connecting your child with Jesus and in teaching them to believe as well as follow Him? We will
After you have made these promises publicly The church will then make a commitment to raise your child in Christ.
The pastor/elder will then pray for you and your child.
FAQ Do you Grace United baptize infants?
No. The Bible provides evidence that Baptism is a result of a person’s decision to believe in Christ solely for salvation (Acts 2:41, 8:12 as well as 10:47 and 48). The New Testament records the baptisms of believers who are adults only.
In the Bible, there are parents taking their kids to Jesus. He was with the children, prayed for the children, and instructed us to greet them. However, He didn’t Baptize them, and He did not instruct anyone other to Baptize them. Grace United believes Baptism is only for those who have made an individual decision to believe in Christ as their only hope for salvation after they have reached the maturity and capability to grasp what this means. The sacrament of dedication is not one neither does it confer the grace or salvation of children.
Instead of baptizing infants and youngsters, Grace is a strong advocate for Christian parents to dedicate their children to. It is a ritual which parents formally request God’s blessing on their child, and then publicly pledge to raise the baby dedication background according to Scripture.
